What Killing Is

I hunted grouse with my father, too young to know what killing was. Their
stomachs were always full of gravel when we opened them. It was how
they digested, my father said. I'd wonder how they fly with so much
weight, then pull the trigger. How you digest says a lot about you, I think.
How you hold this stuff inside that isn't ever yours.
